Support The El Salitre Community Center

A Bright Light of Safety and Hope for Women and Children

Follow along as we embark on our most exciting effort to date — construction of a 5,150 square foot community center that will dramatically impact the women and children of El Salitre!

We need your help to make the community center a reality. Your contribution to our $240,000 goal will make a lasting impact in the lives of the families of El Salitre.

The El Salitre Women and Children’s Center celebrates its successes so far:

  • All of our families now have daily meals.

  • Five women have become skilled seamstresses and embroiderers.

  • Two women used microloans from the Center to start their own businesses.

  • All 18 children at the Center are still in school (most children in the community drop out in elementary school).

  • Two young women are studying to become teachers at the Center.

  • All of our families have improved in health and reduced illnesses because of access to better nutrition and medicines.

With a new community center to act as a hub for our efforts, we can continue to grow and accomplish so much more!

Leti’s Story

When Leti joined us, she was pregnant with her youngest child. She had never been to school and was extraordinarily shy, so she struggled to find a job. Her children were always hungry and frequently ill, and she worried about the health and development of her unborn son.

Now Leti is a confident young woman. As a seamstress at the Center, she makes a steady income of $40 per week. Her family eats without fear of running out of food and her children are much healthier. Leti’s literacy and math skills are developing and her oldest daughter is now attending a private school through a grant from the Center.

EL Salitre Women’s and Children’s Center has a vision of expanding its opportunities for families in Guatemala. Help us continue to support women like Leti by donating to our capital campaign.

 The community center will include:

  • Community kitchen, pantry and outdoor dining porch for hosting nutrition classes and preparing and enjoying healthy food. The kitchen will also serve elderly in the community.

  • Preschool, with additional play space younger children and a work lab with technology access for older children

  • Library

  • Bathrooms

  • Director’s office

As we build the center, we will add additional families to our program, eventually employing 25 women as seamstresses. We will also be supporting additional microloans, developing gardens, adding chickens and goats to support nutrition, and offering additional educational opportunities and affordable food for the broader community.

The El Salitre Community Center Will:

  • Support community collaboration and innovation

  • Offer educational and vocational opportunities for women and their children

  • Provide chances to prepare, enjoy and learn about nutritious food

  • Be a potential host for microbusinesses and celebrations of community successes

  • Strengthen women-to-women networks and job skills development

The El Salitre community center will be a physical manifestation of all that we hope to nurture within this community. It will be a place where women and their children can feel safe, healthy and prosperous. A place where community members can help each other thrive. It will be a gathering and work space where families are supported and can dream of brighter futures.
